"There's a reason the most honored (and widely read) publications are not fashioned in hot, trendy styles: It's because they're designed for the reader, not the artist."
- John McWade

What's New?
I'm now offering photo restoration and retouching services. Do you have some old, damaged photos, or some photos that need to be altered or improved? Check out what I can do for you.
I've started a blog to discuss (mostly) issues related to illustration and graphic design. Check it out and leave a comment or two.
The Print Shop is open. I have created a new page devoted to images that are available as prints. The prints will be made by me personally on demand using the best available archival inks and premium paper. They will be be available in various sizes and all will be signed and dated. Be sure to check back soon. I hope to be able to take payments via credit cards when this is all ready.

About My Illustrations
I create my illustrations using a combination of photography (my own and royalty free stock), some 3D modeling and plain old digital painting. When I was younger I built a lot of plastic model kits. One of the things I had the most fun with was combining parts from different kits to create something completely new. Its called "kitbashing" among model builders. I guess my illustration could be called "imagebashing". It is more than simply "photomanipilation" . A motorcycle fuel tank might become the basis of a futuristic ray gun. A crashed truck might be recycled as parts of a derelict spaceship. With some careful blending and additional digital painting the source material (hopefully!) will not be apparent.
Photoshop (still using version 6) is my main application for manipulating bits and pieces of photos. I use Truespace for the occasional 3D model and for a diagram or infographic I reach for Illustrator or Freehand.
I try to make my digital pieces as complete as possible so that I can send clients electronic files for printing. For display prints I will either make a straight print with archival Epson inks on high quality matte paper or I will print on to artist quality canvas that I mount on stretcher bars, typically 11 x 14 or 12x16 inches. Since ink jet printers rarely capture all of the subtelty of the original digital file--especially when printed on relatively rough canvas--I usually "embellish" the canvas prints to create a "hybrid" digital/acrylic piece of art. This embellishment might be as simple as a few glazes to saturate or unify colors or as complex as manually painting in areas that don't print out as well as I would like. Each piece becomes a unique work of art.
